It’s Better to Use No Products Than to Use the Wrong Products
Skin care products should be used as a bridge that supports your skin as it’s healing. If the products are causing the issues to linger, develop new issues, or worsen the original problem, this is your body’s plea for you to stop.
But here’s the truth: using no products is better than using the wrong products.
I’ve been in the holistic and skin healing world for over three decades, and one of the most overlooked reasons why skin doesn’t improve or gets worse is product overload.
Not just too many products, but the wrong products. Especially when those products are designed to suppress symptoms instead of working with the body’s deeper needs, the actual reason for the skin issue. When symptoms (in this case skin conditions) are suppressed, this is causing the body to become further out of balance.
Signs Your Products Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good
Your breakouts aren’t calming down.
If you're still seeing new breakouts regularly or they're taking longer to heal…that’s a sign your products aren’t working with your skin. In fact, they are probably agitating it.Your skin feels irritated, red, overly pink or ghostly pale.
These are significant signs of imbalances. Your skin shouldn’t experience new symptoms such as inflammation, dryness, or burning - but if you do, this is your skin’s way of asking you to discontinue the product. This is no different than the pain you will feel when you put your hand too close to the flame of a candle, your pain receptors are triggering the message of pain so you quickly remove your hand.
So, why do we keep putting the “flame” of the wrong products on the body’s largest organ? Misinformation, that’s why.
You’re not seeing any improvement within 30 days.
Let’s be clear: this doesn’t mean your skin will be flawless in a month. But you should absolutely notice small but steady signs that things are moving in the right direction. Try taking weekly pictures to track the progress.
The Ridiculous Myth of “the breakout phase”
Some estheticians and dermatologists still cling to the notion that your skin has to purge and get worse before it gets better ~ as it’s adjusting to their protocol.
New Truth: The body will purge through the skin if it is unable to eliminate toxins efficiently via urine, bowel, and sweat. It will also talk back like an unruly teenager if a product isn’t appropriate for your skin.
Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Listening to your mama bear gut feeling is more powerful than any label or influencer’s empty promise. Skin care shouldn’t hurt, if it does - you’re doing it wrong.
So What Should You Do Instead?
Pause the routine. Let the skin breathe and reset. Try cleansing with plain warm water for a few weeks to see how their skin is adjusting to the simplicity, most people will see improvements.
Teens with acne have a tendency to over cleanse their skin, this compromises the integrity and health of the skin which actually slows down the healing process.
When a practitioner says “let’s try this product [or service] and see if this helps”, that should be a sign to run for the hills.
If a practitioner truly understands how the body functions, why the body is producing acne, and how to effectively restore balance and harmony in the body - they should know without a shadow of doubt what will work for you and what won’t.
