Teen Acne Isn’t a Phase, It’s a Wake-up Call
“They’ll grow out of it.”
“It’s just hormones.”
“Everyone gets pimples at that age.”
If I had a dollar for every time a parent told me they were told to wait for their teen to “grow out of it,” or “wait for things to kick in” I could buy up every useless acne product on the market and throw them all in the trash where they belong.
Teen acne isn’t a rite of passage. It’s a red flag, and brushing it off as just part of being a teenager is doing more harm than good.
The Real Cost of “It’s Just a Phase”
We’ve normalized breakouts like they’re some sort of acne initiation ceremony into adulthood. In addition to their skin breakouts, our teens are breaking down emotionally. They’re ashamed of their skin, frustrated and confused with their bodies, and constantly bombarded with product promises that rarely, if ever, deliver.
What this mindset really does is delay healing. It dismisses the skin’s cries for help and teaches teens to ignore their bodies instead of learning how to listen.
Acne Is a Messenger, Not a Mistake
In my clinic, I treat acne for what it truly is: a biological and emotional messaging system.
For example: If digestion is sluggish, emotions are stuck, or sleep is out of wack, the skin will speak up. Acne is the body’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s not right in here.”
Instead of understanding and responding to that message, the acne industry throws topical products at it or suggests oral supplementation and tells everyone to be patient. No wonder teens feel defeated.
We Don’t Wait, We Awaken
At MV Skin Consulting, I don’t hand out prescriptions or push skincare lines. I guide teens (and their moms) through a process I call The Acne Awakening™, a complete shift in how we approach breakouts.
We get to the root of what’s out of balance (and guess what…it’s never because they are a teenager):
What are they eating and when?
How are they handling stress?
Is their digestion sluggish, body overloaded with toxicity, or sleep disrupted?
Are emotions like frustration, disappointment, or insecurity building up in the body?
And then we work with the body to support it, rather than fight it or punish it with harsh products. No meds. No side effects. No guessing.
Proof That It’s Not Just Hormones
One teen came to me after years of the “she’ll grow out of it” advice. She’d tried dermatologists, facials, eliminating sugar and dairy, and any advice thrown her way on social media. She was confused, frustrated, and believed she was doomed to always hating her skin.
In just 3 months, after a few daily tweaks, her skin looked amazing. Her confidence came back. Acne wasn’t the enemy, misinformation was.
