Teen Anxiety and Acne Are More Connected Than You Think
Teen years are already a rollercoaster with hormonal changes, emotional and environmental stressors, and trying to find your place. Then it seems like a switch gets flipped and now your face decides to join this new found chaos by breaking out.
Your skin isn’t just randomly freaking out, it’s always sending messages about what’s really going on in your body.
Anxiety is more than extreme worry and concern. It also impacts your entire body, especially your digestive system. It can mess with how well you process food and toxins. When stress hits, your body’s balance gets out of whack and that imbalance shows up in your skin. Your skin can get overloaded and clogged with emotional, physical, and chemical stressors.
This is similar to a river getting bogged down with a bunch of trash and debris. The water flows for a while until it gets overwhelmed by the amount of garbage, then it creates flow issues. Often we’ll see that the water stops flowing and this build up of water (where it doesn’t belong) can impact the surroundings.
If you treat acne as a skin problem, you’re only putting a band-aid on the symptoms. The root cause hasn’t been addressed, so the body’s internal “river” is getting clogged with garbage that still needs to be cleared out.
So, next time a teen is stressing over their breakouts, remember it’s their body’s way of saying, “slow down and take care of me.”
